The Indian Frontier in British East Florida: Letters to Governor James Grant from British Soldiers and Indian Traders.
This webpage focuses on the activities and observations of British soldiers assigned to Fort St. Marks as expressed in their letters to Colonel James Grant, the governor of British East Florida. Also included are letters from the governor to the commanders at the fort, and correspondence between the governor and his superior officers, and John Stuart, the British Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Southern Provinces.
The correspondence can be found in the James Grant of Ballindalloch Papers, Governorship Series, National Archives of Scotland, Edinburgh. Microfilm copies of the correspondence can be found at the Library of Congress, Washington, and the Jay I. Kislak Foundation, Miami Lakes, Florida.
The letters and documents were transcribed by James Hill, a graduate student in the Department of History at the University of North Florida and the College of William and Mary. Original spelling was retained except in cases where the meaning was distorted. The correspondence is identified by names of author and recipient, the location where the letter was written, and by date. To located the documents in the James Grant of Ballindalloch Papers, they are cited as JGP: R (for microfilm number) and F (for frame number or numbers within the roll)
