RED HILL CEMETERY PROJECT

Grave Markers

Rusted temporary gravesite marker in Red Hill Cemetery

Over the last half century, the site has suffered from neglect, intentional vandalism, and aborted efforts at redevelopment, leaving the nearly six-acre parcel overgrown with brush and pines and marked by open graves and toppled monuments. With as many as 2,000 burials, the cemetery, even in its current condition, memorializes the lives and struggles of an African American community during a period of monumental political, social, and cultural change.

No one seems to have been buried in the cemetery since the 1960s. Fallen leaves and tree limbs cover the ground. In collaboration with the Okefenokee Heritage Center and the Black Heritage Committee, the Red Hill Cemetery Project seeks to identify and record the history of the gravesites, especially the ones that are marked, before the often-neglected voices fall irretrievably silent. If you are a surviving family member, or know of any who are relatives of the marked gravesites, please contact David Sheffler at david.sheffler@unf.edu.

Note: The data on this site is constantly being updated and amended. Additional names and grave markers will be added as we gather the information.
